The New Covenant

When did the New Covenant begin, and to whom was this New Covenant given?

Well, this topic will bring up all sorts of controversy because some cannot accept the truth of when the New Covenant was given and who it was given to. Mostly, the Western church believes it has replaced Israel, and the New Covenant is handed down to the church. Well, I have some news for those who think that the church has replaced Israel or that the New Covenant was awarded to the gentile church.

Question: At what point did the New Covenant start?

Answer: The New Covenant started when Jesus died (Luke 22:20; Hebrews 9:16). Galatians 4:4 explains that Jesus existed and carried out his ministry under the Old Covenant. Jesus’ teachings shed light on the authentic spirit of the Old Testament law.

Digging In: After completing the Old Testament, we move on to the New Testament, which begins with Matthew 1. However, it is essential to note that the New Testament era, also known as the New Covenant, does not truly commence in Matthew 1. That is accurate. Baby Jesus does not symbolize the arrival of God’s new way of grace in a manger. The new covenant did not start until 33 years later when Christ died (Luke 22:20; Hebrews 9:16).

Question: To whom was the New Covenant given?
Answer: The Jewish Nation, Israel.

Question: How do the Gentiles become participants in the New Covenant?
Answer: In the old covenant revelation, the complete inclusion of the Gentile nations as equal citizens in God’s kingdom was not explicitly stated. Therefore, in today’s passage, Paul reveals that Gentiles are now referred to as “fellow heirs” with Jews, making it clear that they are partakers of the divine promises (Ephesians 3:5-6).
