No Way Back

Hebrews Chapter 6 Verses 4-6

It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance.

This is a topic that has tremendous implications for all those who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ and yet fall away or live a precarious life. I am certain Hebrews 6:4-6 relates to what Jesus said in Matthew 12:31 “blasphemy against the Spirit.” I really don’t see a difference between the priests who were accusing Jesus of casting out demons under the power of the evil one, or someone who has shared in the Spirit, God’s love, tasted His goodness, and saw what the future held, used His gift’s, and then fall away from the faith. The result of this hard-heartedness is no forgiveness in this age or the one to come. There is no way back!

Matthew 12: 31-32 (NIV) And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Let me state this as clearly as I can: Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit as stated by Jesus in the gospels cannot be repeated today: Jesus Christ is not on earth—He is seated at the right hand of God. No one can personally witness Jesus performing a miracle and then attribute that power to Satan instead of the Spirit.

However, people can claim that miracles today are attributed to Satan rather than the Spirit which would result in ‘blaspheming the Spirit.‘ Interestingly, if you read Matthew 12 and 13 you will soon come to understand that the Jews who made the statement that Jesus was casting out daemons by the work of the evil one knew it was not, and that is a very wrong turn for them and those after them who would hold to such nonsense. Think of it this way: When you begin to speak against the Spirit you are in fact saying that you recognize the supernatural, you see the supernatural at work but think it is from hell, and not heaven. For that you will not be forgiven–today or tomorrow. That is the very same issue in Hebrews 6:4-6, which is also a blasphemy against the Spirit and, there is no way back to repentance or salvation. Don’t sign on to the doctrine of once saved always saved, unless you understand that being saved finally time has two directions. There is no other way around the issue of blaspheming the Spirit; a person who does such is lost for all eternity–the one direction you don’t wish to travel. Putting this in different words: If you have seen the supernatural and the ministry of the Spirit of God through Jesus Christ and conclude that it is of the Devil you cannot be forgiven now or ever.

There are some that carry this way too far. For example, if someone tells you that when the Holy Spirit calls you and you refuse the Spirits call that you are blaspheming the Holy Spirit and walk away because that is not true. In every case, the issue Jesus raised and what the writer of Hebrews states deals with attributing the working of the Holy Spirit to what is evil, and both what Jesus points out and the writer of Hebrews it is always an issue of words, and those words come from the heart. (Luke 6:45).

A lot more could be said about this and there are plenty of examples of what the consequences are when calling the Spirit evil.

Look at the following scriptures for reference:

1 Samuel 12:14-15; 1 Samuel 15:22-23; 2 Samuel 12:14; Isaiah 52:5; Numbers 27:14.

Also, compare what Jesus said in Matthew 12:22-36; Mark 3: 28-29; Luke 12:10

This is a very tough topic to cover because of the consequences involved. It is seldom talked about, just like many other tough verses in the Bible. Bottom line is if a person blasphemy the Spirit there is no way back.

Note: This post will undoubtedly be updated from time to time. This is a huge topic to discuss, and this post is just the opening attempt.
