Not Biblical
I’m not going to rationalization “I’m only human” using Paul’s statement in Romans 7:15- 18 as support except to say that far too many people use “I’m only human” as a scapegoat means to justify their continued sinning. I have used Paul’s word to justify the things I knew was wrong and went ahead and did it anyway with just a slight tug to resist. It is time to cease giving in to selfish desires and grow up in the Lord.
Let me add what these verses represent:
Scripture | Commentary |
---|---|
7:15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. |
what I hate, this I do introspection needed since this reflects a self-internal conflict. |
7:16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. | I agree with the law that it is good While the inability to do what is righteous and holy highlights humanity’s fallen nature, it also demonstrates the goodness of the law in contrast to the power of sin. (We are not under the law) |
7:17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. | no longer the one doing it no personal responsibility for sinful behavior, and no recognition that sin has an indwelling power. In chapter 8, Paul declares that believers are filled with God’s Spirit. We do not have to give in to our sinful desires. Everyone has a weakness and a choice. |
7:18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. | good does not live in me the weakness of people prohibits them from making the choice not to do what is good by claiming that the Holy Spirit is not present within them all the time. |
Now, let me link to a blog that does an excellent writeup on the topic of “I’m only human.“
