Communion: Subdued or Joyful?

Thought for today, 11-7-2024

During corporate communion are people subdued or joyful?

Remember 1 John 2:27 (NLT), “But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true, and it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.

Many people accept only certain parts of what is written, often focusing on specific Biblical texts that support a particular viewpoint while ignoring the full context and the implications for believers. Frequently, important words are overlooked that guide us on how to properly share the bread of life and the cup of forgiveness, as well as the consequences of our actions.

This morning, I was inspired to read Acts chapter two. While reading, I thought of our church family and how sad they seem during communion.

Sometimes, we overlook words that guide us in distributing the bread of life, the cup of forgiveness, and the consequences that may follow.

Acts 2:46-47 (NLT), “They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And the Lord added to their fellowship each day those who were being saved.”

I hope everyone approaches the sacrament with joyful attitudes rather than with expressions that suggest they are waiting to view someone who recently passed away.

The Holy Spirit guides and teaches us daily if we open our hearts and minds to what the Spirit reveals.
